Teaching Students To Teach Themselves

Blendspace is a great content curation tool that teachers have been using for years to flip their class materials. However, taken one step further, it is a valuable tool to teach students because as they learn to use flipped modules and to create their own, they are actually learning self efficacy as independent learners. Authoring a curated learning module forces you to think about what content is important as well as what particular media and materials would be most effective and appealing to the particular audience given the situation. Below is an example of a Blendspace module to teach the product design process and to have students design or redesign a product:

In this unit students will be asked to create instructional modules in Blendspace to share with the class. Topics include:

1) How to collaborate

2) How to be a professional

3) Client interaction

4) Principles of design

In addition, at the conclusion of the unit, students will document and share their learning process by creating a Blendspace "scrapbook" to show off artifacts documenting their learning process (drawings, screenshots, journals, feedback, etc.)
